"Xysma stands for "membranous shreds in the faeces". The band was originally called Repulse. Xysma was the first Finnish grindcore band.

Xysma quickly moved away from extreme metal, starting off as goregrind, then evolving into a stylistic mix of 70's heavy rock, particularly Black Sabbath and death metal. Then they evolved into pure retro rock, and finally, pop. Many Finnish death metal bands, like Convulse, Lubricant, Paraxism, Godfall, Pakeni and Disgrace (Fin), followed Xysma's steps."
